THE GEORGIA COURT SYSTEM
MUNICIPAL COURT
There are over 400 local courts of the Georgia Judicial System. Jurisdiction is limited to misdemeanor offenses of shoplifting of $500 or less; possession of marijuana (less than 1 ounce) and traffic offenses including DUI. The court adjudicates violations of local ordinances including zoning and parking offenses. Municipal Court also imposes civil penalties for photo-enforced red-light violations and photo-enforced school bus stop arm violations.
MAGISTRATE COURT
Magistrate court is responsible for hearing matters relating to cases that have not yet been formally charged. Hearings related to bond and probable cause hearings are handled at Magistrate Court.
STATE COURT
State court presides over criminal cases that are below the grade of felony. In other words, state court hears misdemeanor cases.
SUPERIOR COURT
Superior court has jurisdiction over all felony cases that originate within the boundaries of the county where that superior court is located.

FULTON COUNTY
Fulton County is located in the north-central portion of Georgia. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 1,066,710, making it the state's most-populous county and its only one with over 1 million inhabitants. Its county seat is Atlanta, the state capital.
